Gastric Vest system is a new device, which can be planted in revolutionary, minimally invasive, laparoscopic ways, protecting the stomach to help weight loss.
As everyone involved in obesity surgery for years know and as we always say, obesity is a chronical disease and the most appropriate cure for it is the gradual treatment starting with the least invasive way. Because even the most popular sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass surgeries are not suitable for everyone and the ultimate success is not guaranteed, either. As the duration of the surgeries increase, the number of the patients needing a second surgery, namely a revision, also increase.
Laparoscopic minimal invasive Gastric Vest System is a procedure developed to protect the stomach anatomy, eliminate the complications caused by stapler line, enforce the sense of fullness by restriction and realize the permanent weight loss in a reversable way. For sure, when unsuccessful, it is always possible to switch to a secondary and powerful procedure, like sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass.
Gastric Vest System is carried out laparoscopically and the device is placed around the stomach. After putting the 36 F tube, the stomach narrows as such. The same tube is also used in sleeve gastrectomy. Stomach is narrowed by complicating over this tube. GVS system is placed and stabilized up to a place near the end of stomach, called incisura angularis, through gullet. The procedure imitate the sleeve gastrectomy without staplers, any incisions on stomach or extracting any parts of stomach.
Although Gastric Vest System can be used as the first step, it can also be used with patients who could not löse enough weight or started to gain weight after the sleeve gastrectomy. It has been observed until recently that it helps 10% loss in the first month, 17% in 3 months and 24% in 6 months. The clinical study on the device is in progress. Gastric Vest will eventually take its place as a new technique among the options, focused on obesity treatment with a minimal invasive approach.
EDIT: The first promising information about the system has turned into a disappointment with the details sent when I tried to join the clinical studies. We have shared all the scientific advancements with you for years. However, that should not necessarily mean that we support all. My recent idea about the gastric vest system is that it cannot be seen as a minimal invasive procedure, it is definitely surgical. It cannot be applied on patients who are not suitable for surgery and I believe it should not be applied on those who are suitable, either. The claim that it is reversable does not reflect the truth, too. Therefore, I suggest patients suitable for obesity surgery not to wait for this method. The others should not wait for it, anyway. Sincerely…
